Session Description: Our overall goal — have fun!! Enjoy singing together and recognize personally how enriching that is … and also to see how energizing singing can be in a community of coaches.
We begin with an exercise that enables each of us to think about our own musical journey and to set the foundation for the rest of the workshop. Next is a short explanation of the recent research on how the brain responds to music. Grounded in the research of Dr. Daniel Levitin and Dr. Susan Rogers, we look at where and how in the brain music is used, and it is a direct pipeline into our amygdala.
No discussion of music is complete without participation. We will jump into participation by singing a few songs. We close with some guidelines and approaches we have used, but more importantly, more singing together to ensure everyone leaves on a high note and with plenty of dopamine, serotonin, melatonin, and oxygen in their bloodstream!
We will have only a few slides about the brain and science, and then we will have song sheets and musical instruments to actually make music together. We will also break the group into smaller “pods” to discuss and make music on their own.
Having worked with a group of 100+ coaches for the last two years, we will bring best practices and an understanding, as well as music that is easy to engage with. It will lower people's barriers against doing something “different” by having coaches experienced in this as part of the workshop.
Learning Objectives:
Experience the power of music personally by actually making music, singing, and participating together.
Understand the neuroscience that provides the foundation for leveraging music for ourselves and for the leaders we work with.
Leave with specific playlists, tools, and a support group to ease into this in their own work.
